CURVE, Pa – The Akron RubberDucks capitalized off a five-run third inning to take the series finale from Altoona on Sunday, 9-2, at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
Facing Curve starter Nick Dombkowski in the third, Akron loaded the bases on two hits and a walk before Juan Brito was hit by a pitch to tie the game 1-1. In the next at-bat, Angel Martinez knocked a grand slam over the wall in left field to make it a 5-1 game. Dombkowski allowed five runs on four hits in 2.2 innings with two walks and two strikeouts.
Jacob Gonzalez plated the game’s first run in the second inning on an RBI-single in the second inning. Mike Jarvis led off the inning by reaching base on an error and stole second before scoring on Gonzalez’s hit off the Akron starter Tommy Mace. Altoona’s only other run came in the fifth, when Matt Fraizer reached on a single and later scored on a wild pitch from Mace.
Michell Miliano followed Dombkowski with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief despite walking three batters.
Akron put the game away with a pair of runs off Tahnaj Thomas in the seventh inning when Juan Brito socked a two-run homer. Thomas tossed two innings of relief in the defeat. Akron added a pair of insurance runs off Cameron Junker in the eighth inning on a two-run double from Brito. Akron’s second baseman drove in five in the game. Grant Ford tossed a scoreless ninth inning for the Curve.
Altoona stranded 12 runners on base in the defeat, falling to 22-27, 56-61. Altoona won four games in the series against the RubberDucks to win the series.
The Curve are off on Monday before traveling to Erie on Tuesday night for a six-game series with the SeaWolves, Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. with RHP Aaron Shortridge set to take the ball against LHP Adam Wolf for Erie.
